More about Portadown

Portadown grew up as a market and canal town on the River Bann. The Newry Canal, which opened in 1742, ran right through the area, linking Lough Neagh toward the sea, and its towpath is now a fully restored walking and cycling route, the Newry Canal Way.

In the town itself, the People's Park occupies part of an old early-1600s estate. And just outside is Ardress House, a 17th-century farmhouse remodelled in Georgian times and now cared for by the National Trust, with guided tours and recreations of old farmyard life.
