More about Newry

Newry has a real place in engineering history: the Newry Canal, opened in 1742, was the first summit-level canal built in the British Isles, running some 18 miles to link the town toward Lough Neagh. The town's name comes from the Irish for "the grove of yew trees," tied to a tradition that Saint Patrick planted a yew here in the 5th century.

Its granite Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Colman was built in 1829, and Newry became a city in 2002 alongside Lisburn. It sits in a valley between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Mourne Mountains to the east and the Ring of Gullion to the southwest.
